تحولت رحلة مدرسية إلى مأساة مروعة في شرق أوغندا، بعدما لقي 21 شخصاً على الأقل مصرعهم وأصيب العشرات إثر انقلاب حافلة كانت تقل تلاميذ خلال رحلة مدرسية في منطقة «كابشوروا»، وفق ما أعلنته السلطات الأوغندية.
وقالت الشرطة إن الحادث وقع بعدما تعرضت الحافلة لعطل ميكانيكي مفاجئ، تسبب في فقدان السائق السيطرة عليها أثناء سيرها، لتنحرف عن الطريق وتصطدم بصخرة كبيرة قبل أن تنقلب، مخلفة عدداً كبيراً من الضحايا والمصابين.
ونقلت هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية (بي بي سي) عن الشرطة أن فرق الإنقاذ هرعت إلى موقع الحادث، حيث جرى نقل المصابين إلى المستشفيات القريبة لتلقي العلاج، بينما فتحت السلطات تحقيقاً للوقوف على ملابسات الحادث وتحديد أسبابه بدقة.
وأثار الحادث موجة من الحزن في أوغندا، وسط دعوات متجددة لتشديد الرقابة على صلاحية المركبات المستخدمة في نقل الطلاب، وتعزيز إجراءات السلامة على الطرق للحد من الحوادث التي تحصد آلاف الأرواح سنوياً.
وتعد حوادث الطرق من أخطر التحديات التي تواجه أوغندا، إذ تسجل البلاد آلاف الوفيات والإصابات كل عام نتيجة حوادث السير، وفق بيانات السلطات المحلية.
ويرجع الخبراء ارتفاع معدلات الحوادث إلى عدة عوامل، أبرزها السرعة الزائدة، وسوء صيانة المركبات، والحمولات الزائدة، ورداءة بعض الطرق، وضعف الالتزام بقواعد المرور، فضلاً عن الأعطال الميكانيكية التي تتسبب في عدد كبير من الحوادث، خاصة في المناطق الجبلية والطرق الريفية.
وتشهد أوغندا بين الحين والآخر حوادث مأساوية تتعلق بحافلات نقل الركاب والطلاب، ما يدفع الحكومة إلى إطلاق حملات دورية لفحص المركبات وتشديد الرقابة المرورية، إلا أن تحديات البنية التحتية ونقص الصيانة لا تزال تمثل عقبة أمام الحد من هذه الحوادث.
A school trip turned into a horrific tragedy in eastern Uganda, after at least 21 people lost their lives and dozens were injured when a bus carrying students overturned during a school trip in the “Kabshorwa” area, according to Ugandan authorities.
The police stated that the incident occurred after the bus experienced a sudden mechanical failure, causing the driver to lose control while driving, veering off the road and crashing into a large rock before overturning, leaving a large number of victims and injured.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that rescue teams rushed to the scene of the accident, where the injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident and accurately identify its causes.
The accident sparked a wave of sorrow in Uganda, amid renewed calls to tighten oversight on the roadworthiness of vehicles used for transporting students and to enhance road safety measures to reduce the accidents that claim thousands of lives each year.
Road accidents are among the most dangerous challenges facing Uganda, as the country records thousands of deaths and injuries each year due to traffic accidents, according to local authorities’ data.
Experts attribute the high rates of accidents to several factors, most notably speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, overloading, the poor condition of some roads, weak adherence to traffic rules, as well as mechanical failures that cause a significant number of accidents, especially in mountainous areas and rural roads.
Uganda occasionally witnesses tragic incidents involving passenger and student transport buses, prompting the government to launch periodic campaigns to inspect vehicles and tighten traffic enforcement; however, infrastructure challenges and a lack of maintenance continue to pose obstacles to reducing these accidents.
