The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is studying the formulation of new restrictions to ban the import of new models of components from Chinese data centers, as part of efforts to protect the infrastructure supporting the AI boom, according to news sites.

The Federal Communications Commission is working on a bill that regulates the ban on optical transceivers responsible for transmitting data over fiber optic cables, to prevent any vulnerabilities related to espionage or malware.

Necessary Measures

For its part, the Chinese embassy in Washington urged the U.S. administration to stop tarnishing the reputation of its companies and threatening them with sanctions, asserting that Beijing will take the necessary measures to protect its economic interests.

Washington aims through these stringent measures to avoid the costly repercussions that previously emerged during the removal of Huawei equipment from telecommunications networks, and to prevent Chinese companies, led by Enolit, which holds 27% of the global market, from accessing the advanced supply chains of U.S. data centers. These decisions are expected to impact the operating costs for cloud computing companies like Amazon, which may turn to relying on local alternatives.

Stock Surge

As news of the anticipated ban circulated, shares of U.S. manufacturers of transceivers jumped significantly, with shares of Lumentum, II-VI, and Applied Optoelectronics rising between 7% and 18%. This move follows previous decisions under which the Federal Communications Commission imposed restrictions on the import of drones, robots, and Chinese converters.
