تخيل أن تفقد حقك في الرعاية الطبية، وتُطاردك مكاتب التحصيل المالي، لا لشيء سوى أن اسمك «أطول من اللازم» في أنظمة الكمبيوتر! هذا ليس مشهداً من فيلم كوميديا سوداء، بل الواقع الأليم الذي تعيشه المعلمة الأمريكية «كاري آن واينبرغر مورنولت»، المقيمة في ولاية كولورادو، والتي وجدت نفسها خارج مظلة التغطية الصحية بسبب خطأ تقني لا يُصدق.
بدأت أزمة «كاري» – التي تحمل هذا الاسم المركّب منذ زواجها قبل 34 عاماً – عندما قررت العام الماضي نقل تغطيتها الصحية إلى شركة «سيغنا». وفجأة، بدأت تتلقى خطابات رفض متتالية لتغطية نفقات فحوصات أساسية كجلسات العلاج الطبيعي وفحص الثدي الشعاعي. ورغم محاولاتها المضنية للوصول إلى رد واف، لم تكن تتوقع أن السر يكمن في «خانة الاسم»!
وبعد أكثر من 16 مكالمة هاتفية مع ممثلي الخدمة، جاءت المفاجأة الصادمة في المكالمة السابعة عشرة: نظام الرعاية الطبية (Medicare) يفرض حداً أقصى لعدد الأحرف لا يستوعب اسمها الكامل. هذا القصور التقني تسبب في طباعة اسمها بأشكال مختلفة ومبتورة على بطاقات التأمين، مما جعل أنظمة التدقيق الآلي ترفض معاملاتها الطبية بحجة «عدم تطابق الهوية»، متجاهلة تماماً تماثل رقم الضمان الاجتماعي وتاريخ الميلاد والعنوان.
وتجد «كاري» نفسها أمام خيار أحلاهم مر؛ فإما أن تتنازل عن اسم عائلتها الذي رافقها لعقود عبر معاملات رسمية معقدة لتغييره، أو تُحرم من الرعاية الطبية وتتراكم عليها الديون. ورغم أنها تحتفظ بأوراق تغيير الاسم على مكتبها، إلا أنها تأبى الخضوع لهذا المنطق المعطوب، وتناشد اليوم كل من واجه هذه العقبة السريالية لتشكيل مجموعات ضغط وتضامن تُجبر شركات التأمين على تحديث أنظمتها العتيقة.

This is not a scene from a dark comedy film, but the painful reality experienced by American teacher “Kari Ann Weinberger Mornault,” who resides in Colorado and found herself outside the umbrella of health coverage due to an unbelievable technical error.
Kari’s crisis – a name she has carried since her marriage 34 years ago – began last year when she decided to transfer her health coverage to Cigna. Suddenly, she started receiving consecutive rejection letters for coverage of essential expenses such as physical therapy sessions and mammograms. Despite her exhausting attempts to get a satisfactory response, she did not expect that the secret lay in the “name field”!
After more than 16 phone calls with service representatives, the shocking surprise came in the seventeenth call: the Medicare system imposes a character limit that does not accommodate her full name. This technical shortcoming led to her name being printed in various truncated forms on insurance cards, causing automated auditing systems to reject her medical transactions on the grounds of “identity mismatch,” completely ignoring the matching Social Security number, date of birth, and address.
Kari finds herself faced with a difficult choice; either she must give up her family name that has accompanied her for decades through complex official transactions to change it, or she will be deprived of medical care and accumulate debts. Although she keeps the name change papers on her desk, she refuses to succumb to this flawed logic, and today she appeals to anyone who has faced this surreal obstacle to form pressure and solidarity groups to force insurance companies to update their outdated systems.
