لم تتوقف الكارثة عند غرق السفن، فمحاولات الإسبان المضنية لاستعادة الثروة على مدار سنوات قوبلت بهجمات دموية من القراصنة، الذين تتبعوا مواقع الإنقاذ واستولوا على أطنان من الذهب والفضة المستخرجة بالرصاص والسيف، لتغرق بقية الأسرار تحت الرمال المتحركة لأكثر من قرنين من الزمان.

وفي ستينيات القرن الماضي، انقلبت المعادلة عندما نجح المستكشف الأمريكي كيب واغنر في تعقب الخيط الأول للغرق، مستخرجاً آلاف القطع النقدية الذهبية والأواني الخزفية النادرة التي أعادت إشعال «حمى الذهب» من جديد.

وعلى الرغم من العقود الطويلة من عمليات الغوص والبحث الحديثة بأجهزة المسح الجيوفيزيائي، يؤكد المؤرخون أن القسم الأكبر من كنوز هذا الأسطول (والذي يُقدر اليوم بمليارات الدولارات) ما زال مدفوناً في مكان ما تحت رمال فلوريدا.

هذا اللغز المعلق الممتد على طول عشرات الكيلومترات البحرية، يحوّل الساحل حتى هذه اللحظة إلى المغناطيس الأول لصائدي الكنوز والمغامرين حول العالم، فالضربة التالية قد تحتفظ بقطعة مجوهرات ملكية واحدة، كفيلة بتغيير حياة من يجدها إلى الأبد.

It is not just the wreck of a ship from the past, but a legendary treasure of pure gold, silver, and royal jewels, which at the time could have saved an entire empire from bankruptcy before being swallowed by the sea in moments.

The story began on a scorching night in the summer of 1715, when a Spanish fleet of 12 massive ships set sail from the Cuban port of Havana, carrying within it riches extracted from the mines of Peru, Mexico, and Colombia, including artifacts and jewelry specially designed for the royal family in Madrid. However, maritime calculations collided with the fury of nature, as a devastating tropical hurricane struck the fleet on July 31, turning the treasure into scattered shards off the American coast and causing the drowning of 1,500 sailors.

The disaster did not stop at the sinking of the ships; the Spaniards’ arduous attempts to recover the wealth over the years were met with bloody attacks from pirates, who tracked the salvage sites and seized tons of gold and silver extracted by lead and sword, causing the rest of the secrets to sink beneath the shifting sands for more than two centuries.

In the 1960s, the equation changed when American explorer Kip Wagner succeeded in tracing the first thread of the wreck, extracting thousands of gold coins and rare ceramic vessels that reignited the “gold rush” once again.

Despite decades of modern diving and searching operations with geophysical surveying equipment, historians confirm that the majority of the treasures from this fleet (which is estimated today to be worth billions of dollars) remain buried somewhere beneath the sands of Florida.

This hanging mystery, extending over dozens of nautical miles, continues to turn the coast into the primary magnet for treasure hunters and adventurers around the world, as the next strike may hold a single royal jewel, capable of changing the life of whoever finds it forever.
