رجّح الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب السيطرة على جزيرة غرينلاند المتمتعة بالحكم الذاتي والتابعة للدنمارك قبل نهاية فترة رئاسته، مما يعيد إحياء أحد طموحات إدارته المثيرة للجدل في السياسة الخارجية.

وأدلى ترمب بهذه التصريحات خلال مقابلة هاتفية مطولة على قناة Real America’s Voice، عندما أثار المذيع ستيف جروبر موضوع حملة الرئيس لإخضاع الجزيرة الواقعة في القطب الشمالي للسيطرة الأمريكية. ووجه جروبر سؤالاً إلى ترمب قائلاً: «إليك سؤال آخر. ما زلتم تنظرون إلى غرينلاند؟ لقد توقعتُ قبل أن تغادروا منصبكم تكون الجزيرة تحت سيطرتنا العملياتية. ولا تزال ذات أهمية بالغة للدفاع عن نصف الكرة الغربي، أليس كذلك؟». رد ترمب معرباً عن ثقته في التوقع: «نعم، ستكون محقاً إذا راهنت على ذلك، غرينلاند مهمة، كما تعلم، من وجهة نظرنا، عليك أن تراهن على ذلك فعلاً». ويعتبر ترمب منذ توليه فترته الرئاسية الثانية أن السيطرة الأمريكية على الجزيرة ضرورية للأمن القومي، مستشهداً بالموقع الاستراتيجي لها في القطب الشمالي وسط منافسة متزايدة مع روسيا والصين. وتصاعد الجدل حول مستقبل غرينلاند على هامش قمة حلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو)، بعدما أعاد ترمب طرح رغبته في أن تسيطر واشنطن عليها، في حين تمسكت كوبنهاجن بالسيادة عليها، مؤكدة أن الجزيرة ليست للبيع، وسط دعم آيسلندي لحق سكانها في تقرير مصيرهم ودعوات للتركيز على التهديدات التي تواجه «الناتو». واعتبر ترمب خلال المقابلة أن الولايات المتحدة وجهت إلى إيران ضربات قاسية جداً، مضيفاً: «يطلبون منا ألا نفعل ذلك، ويقولون إنهم يريدون التفاوض، وعندما نبدأ في التفاوض، وفي خضم المفاوضات يطلقون 5 صواريخ علينا، وأسقطنا الصواريخ جميعها، ثم لقّناهم درساً قاسياً». وأشار إلى حجم الخسائر البشرية في صفوف الجيش الأمريكي خلال المواجهة مع إيران قائلاً: «خسرنا 16 أو 18 شخصاً، وهذا عدد كبير جداً، لأن خسارة شخص واحد هي خسارة أكثر مما ينبغي». وأضاف: «لكن عندما تنظرون إلى فيتنام، وأفغانستان، وكوريا، وحروب أخرى، تجدون أنها استمرت لسنوات. فقد استمرت حرب فيتنام 21 عاماً، أما نحن، فما زلنا في شهرنا الخامس، ومع ذلك يقولون إن الحرب استغرقت وقتاً طويلاً. الأشخاص أنفسهم الذين أبقونا في فيتنام هم من يشتكون الآن. إنها السياسة، وهذا أمر مؤسف». وتطرق ترمب إلى ما كان ينوي القيام به عند اندلاع المواجهة مع إيران قائلاً: «الحقيقة أنني أقوم بعمل أكبر بكثير مما قلت إنني سأقوم به، كنت أنوي الدخول، وتدمير قدراتهم العسكرية، ثم الانسحاب، لكنني أدركت أنه إذا فعلنا ذلك، فلا بد من وجود نوع من الاستمرار أو المتابعة، وإلا فإنهم سيعيدون بناء قدراتهم».

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that he aims to gain control over the self-governing island of Greenland, which is part of Denmark, before the end of his presidency, reviving one of his administration’s controversial foreign policy ambitions.

Trump made these remarks during a lengthy phone interview on Real America’s Voice, when host Steve Gruber brought up the president’s campaign to bring the Arctic island under American control. Gruber asked Trump, “Here’s another question. Are you still looking at Greenland? I predicted before you left office that the island would be under our operational control. It’s still of great importance for the defense of the Western Hemisphere, isn’t it?” Trump responded, expressing confidence in the prediction: “Yes, you would be right to bet on that. Greenland is important, you know, from our perspective, you really have to bet on that.” Since taking office for his second term, Trump has considered American control over the island essential for national security, citing its strategic location in the Arctic amid increasing competition with Russia and China. The debate over Greenland’s future intensified on the sidelines of the NATO summit after Trump reiterated his desire for Washington to take control of it, while Copenhagen maintained its sovereignty, asserting that the island is not for sale, amidst Icelandic support for its residents’ right to self-determination and calls to focus on the threats facing NATO. During the interview, Trump stated that the United States has dealt very harsh blows to Iran, adding, “They ask us not to do that, and they say they want to negotiate, and when we start negotiating, in the midst of the negotiations, they launch 5 missiles at us, and we shot down all the missiles, then we taught them a harsh lesson.” He pointed to the human toll on the U.S. military during the confrontation with Iran, saying, “We lost 16 or 18 people, and that’s a very large number, because losing one person is more than it should be.” He added, “But when you look at Vietnam, Afghanistan, Korea, and other wars, you find that they lasted for years. The Vietnam War lasted 21 years; we are still in our fifth month, and yet they say the war has taken too long. The same people who kept us in Vietnam are the ones complaining now. It’s politics, and that’s unfortunate.” Trump also discussed what he intended to do when the confrontation with Iran broke out, saying, “The truth is I’m doing a lot more than I said I would do. I intended to go in, destroy their military capabilities, and then withdraw, but I realized that if we did that, there had to be some kind of continuity or follow-up, otherwise they would rebuild their capabilities.”
