Jeddah’s beaches have previously witnessed cleaning campaigns led by divers to protect endangered coral reefs. Earlier, diving activities revealed three sunken ships on the seabed, some of which date back to the mid-18th century.

Along with the sunken ships, most of the debris on the seabed consists of plastic waste and solid waste that threaten wildlife and coral reefs, in addition to water bottles, food supplies, damaged fishing nets, and nylon lines that cause entrapment and death of marine life, as well as metal and glass cans and small waste that mix with the sand and are consumed by fish, along with abandoned nets that have caused the entrapment and death of fish and marine creatures. With the increasing diving activity to remove waste, others are also diving for fun, recreation, and exploration. One of the latest activities reported by “Okaz” was an adventure involving several Saudi female divers with sharks and the discovery of the mysteries of the sea.
