The American passport has seen a notable decline on the “Henley” Passport Index for 2026, settling in the tenth position globally, marking one of its weakest standings compared to two decades ago, at a time when Asian countries continue their rapid rise in the ranking of passport strength and global mobility.
According to the latest version of the index, the American passport allows its holders to enter 180 destinations worldwide without the need for a prior visa; however, this number is no longer sufficient to maintain its advanced position, as 36 countries have managed to achieve a better ranking.

Singapore tops the global ranking with access to 192 destinations, while the United Arab Emirates, Japan, and South Korea share the second position with 188 destinations. Sweden comes in third with 187 destinations, and a group of European countries occupies the fourth position with 186 destinations.
The 2026 ranking reflects a gradual shift in the global influence map, with a clear rise of Asian countries and some nations in the Middle East, contrasted with a relative decline of some traditional powers. Competition is no longer solely about economic size or military strength but has extended to the ability of countries to facilitate the movement of their citizens across borders.
The “Henley” Index is one of the most prominent global rankings of passport strength, measuring the number of destinations that holders of each passport can enter without obtaining a prior visa, based on international travel data. The index data shows that the average number of destinations accessible without a visa has significantly increased globally over the past two decades, making the competition for travel freedom more intense.
The American passport held a very advanced position in global rankings two decades ago, but the faster rise of other countries has led to its relative decline. Its tenth-place ranking does not mean it has lost all its strength, as it remains among the strongest passports in the world; however, the striking difference is that other countries have succeeded in expanding their network of international agreements at a much faster pace.
The experience of the UAE, in particular, highlights the role that active diplomacy and international partnerships can play in enhancing passport strength, transforming it into one of the indicators of a country’s global presence and influence.
